The Open Trick-Taking Network
King is our flagship title, taking the classic trick-taking card experience and rebuilding it from the ground up as an open network. Unlike traditional walled-garden games, King's core game logic and network protocol are completely open and deeply extensible, allowing anyone to build upon its structural foundation.
While the protocol belongs to the open ecosystem, Sintropia Studios is forging the definitive, highly-polished client. We are bringing a seamless, beautifully crafted experience across desktop, web, and mobile devices, connecting players effortlessly to the wider King network.
The Rules of Engagement
At its core, King is a highly strategic trick-taking card game driven by shifting objectives. The match is divided into "negative" penalty rounds—where taking tricks, hearts, or the titular King of Hearts loses you points—and "positive" rounds where players bid and compete to secure points.
The Sintropia client runs on a refined, agency-driven ruleset based on extensive playtesting. We stripped away the traditional, rigid sequence of hands, giving players absolute freedom to choose which hand to play based on their initial deal. Combined with strict bid resolutions and nuanced discard mechanics for the King of Hearts, every match is a battle of structural planning and adaptation.
The Origins: "Aloja"
King is more than an exercise in protocol architecture; it carries a deep personal footprint. My first contact with this specific, high-agency ruleset happened during college while living in the student residence—affectionately known as "Aloja" (short for Alojamento/Quarters).
While not universally played across the campus, it commanded a fierce, dedicated following. Regular competitions were fought purely for bragging rights, forging a distinct culture of strategic rivalry. As a homage to those roots, the AI opponents you face in the Sintropia client bear the names of the very characters who defined that era.
Watch it Grow
The core network and protocol are being built entirely in the open. You can follow the structural development, review the architecture, and explore the engine driving the game by visiting our open-source repository.
